One-on-one Private Tutoring, College Counseling
|
Stephen Heiner has been tutoring since 1996 and is the only SAT/ACT tutor in the Midwest to be interviewed about test prep and college counseling on television (KCTV, KSHB), radio (KCTE 1510 and KCUR 89.3) and in print (Kansas City Star, 435 South, Ingram's, Kansas City Small Business Journal, Kansas City Business Magazine, Johnson County Gazette). He has personally developed and trained a posse of instructors at Get Smarter Prep who share his passion for teaching and consistently obtain score increases for their students.
Stephen spent two years in the New Hampshire woods at a small, awesome, nerdy, liberal arts institution called Thomas More College. He studied abroad in Rome, where he delighted at being 15 minutes walking distance from the Vatican. He eventually finished his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, with minors in Catholic Studies and Business, at Rockhurst University. He also spent 4 years in the US Marine Corps Reserve as a Nuclear Biological and Chemical Defense specialist.
Stephen is still very actively involved in college education and activities. In 2008, he served as the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's Great Plains' Region Student Ambassador. He was elected the 2009-2010 Student Representative for the Midwestern Region for Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. He also served as the 2010 Chancellor for the Nu Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, the International Business Fraternity. In 2011, he served as the Director of Student Outreach for The Rockford Institute, a cultural thinktank in Rockford, Illinois. In 2012 he will teach Rockhurst University's first entrepreneurship and small business course to students in the Graduate MBA program.
When he’s not busy trying to take over the world or get his students into the colleges of their choice, Stephen is busy as a writer, interviewer, and skier. He has been published in both secular and religious periodicals and runs a small publishing house.
Stephen most recently finished a Masters in Business Administration at St. Louis University and is quite done with formal education, thank you very much.
Stephen is available to tutor 12pm-4:30pm on Saturdays. |

Originally from Overland Park, Stefan began teaching test prep for Get Smarter when we first opened our doors in Kansas City in 2006. After a misguided (and brief) sojourn working as a business consultant, he returned to Get Smarter in 2009. Stefan has tutored in various subjects ranging from music to statistics to sociology, and of course ACT and SAT, since 2004.
Stefan holds a BS in Finance with a minor in Sociology from the University of Kansas and is currently working on his MA in Sociology at KU. When not teaching at Get Smarter or KU, he can usually be found working on his thesis or trying to find the time and money to travel or go to the symphony on a graduate student's budget.
Stefan is available to tutor on Saturdays and select times during the week. |

A Columbia University grad, Casey came to Get Smarter from a big box test prep company where he taught regular ACT and SAT prep but also taught GMAT, GRE, and even the verbal part of the MCAT.
Jolly enough to cheer up even the most melancholic among us, Casey has also tutored in Russian languages and literature, 20th Century Music composition, and Mathematics. When he's not teaching, you can find him sharing his love of electronic music as a DJ (something he's done for almost 20 years) or tasting wine (he's a certified Sommelier).

Trisha was born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin (Go Pack!) and is working on correcting her strong Wisconsin accent. (Just ask her to say the word bag and you will understand!) She recently moved to Kansas City, Missouri to pursue a law degree at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. She received a Political Science degree and secondary education emphasis from St. Norbert College, a small, liberal arts school in Wisconsin. She plans on graduating in 2012 from law school and wants to pursue a career in family law. While she enjoys law school, teaching will always be her main passion and she enjoys working with high school students.
Trisha spent the last year surviving her first year of law school all while planning her wedding. While most would say that was downright crazy, she loved how life was so busy and chaotic. During her second year of law school she is going to be a teaching assistant for the legal writing program and will be busy working on her Law Review article. Now that life will slow down a little since she's a married old woman, she looks forward to spending her free time hanging out with her husband, finding time to travel, and catching up on her scrapbooks.
Trisha is available to tutor after 4:00pm Monday-Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

She is currently in the process of finishing a Master’s Degree in Physics with an emphasis in education at UMKC, where, after finishing her BS there, she has also taught undergraduate physics classes for the last three years. Over the next few years Rachel plans on working toward her high school teaching certification.

| Madison Huber-Smith |
| *Classroom Instructor* |
|
| Topics: |
SAT Standard Classroom Courses (22 hours), ACT Standard Classroom Courses (22 hours)
|
A long time resident of Overland Park, Madison attended Shawnee Mission West, where she was one of the top 10 students in her class. She then ventured into the heart of Kansas to attend Kansas State University. While there, she studied anthropology, Spanish, international studies, and leadership studies (She likes to learn!). She also had the opportunity to study in Ronda, Spain, for a semester and to travel throughout Europe.
After K-State, she decided to switch her allegiance and get her MA in cultural anthropology from the University of Kansas. She actually loves both KU and K-State, so don’t make her choose sides!
Madison is now an adjunct professor in anthropology at Johnson County Community College. When she’s not teaching her college students that anthropology is not the study of dinosaurs, she enjoys cycling, cooking, playing laser with her kitty, and reminiscing with her husband about their recent wedding on top of a mountain in Colorado. |

| Elaina Murray |
| *Classroom Instructor* |
|
| Topics: |
ACT Standard Classroom Courses (22 hours), SAT Standard Classroom Courses (22 hours)
|
Elaina attended Seaman High School in Topeka, Kansas, where she graduated summa cum laude and was the president of more clubs and groups than she remembers. She left the Midwest for Boston where she attended Wellesley College, a small, all women, liberal arts college. While there, she studied Biology and Economics and found time to run the 114th Boston Marathon (the halfway point on the route is in front of her dormitory!).
After college, Elaina decided to take off and have an adventure, so she joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Benin, a small West African country that no one can find on a map. There she learned French and Dendi, taught health education classes in her village, and got in touch with nature. Elaina will be attending the University of Kansas Medical School after her wedding this summer to her high school sweetheart (awww).
When she’s not catching up on two years’ worth of popular culture, Elaina writes young adult and middle grade fiction, plays as much Skyrim as possible, and prepares for the impending zombie apocalypse. She’s currently training for her second marathon and her second degree black belt in Hawaiian Kempo.
